OurGroceries alternative: how MyListResort compares

OurGroceries is a shared grocery list that households have relied on for years, and it is genuinely good at the job it picked: fast entry, automatic aisle grouping, and it reaches more devices than we do. Both apps keep one list in sync for everyone at home. The differences worth knowing are what a list is allowed to be, and who pays for the free tier.

Ads

OurGroceries says the app is free but shows ads in a few screens to help pay for continued development, and documents a Remove Ads upgrade that also clears the ads for everyone you share your lists with.1

No ads on any tier, the free one included, and no advertising business behind the app.

What a list can be

OurGroceries documents lists and recipes as the things you create. Its user guide does not document due dates, recurring items, or a calendar.1

Six kinds on one account: groceries with once-opened freshness, recipes and guides, maintenance and cleaning that repeat on their own intervals, shopping and events, checklists, and progress or chore boards.

Giving a job to a person

OurGroceries documents assigning items to categories, which is what groups the shopping list. Its user guide does not document assigning an item to a person.1

An item or a card can carry a person, and a shared list filters to one of them, which is what makes a rotating chore schedule or a packing list for each traveler work.

Where it runs

OurGroceries documents voice commands on Android and Wear OS, Siri, an Apple Watch app, a Mac app for Apple Silicon, and an AI integration over an MCP server.1

No Siri, no watch app and no voice today. It installs to any phone or desktop straight from the browser, and it does not need a store account.

Shelf-life windows come from the USDA FoodKeeper, published by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (public domain). These are quality estimates, not food-safety determinations or guarantees: actual condition depends on storage and handling, and harmful bacteria may not have obvious signs. Follow package and official guidance; when in doubt, throw it out.

What MyListResort does

  • Once-opened freshness

Mark an item opened and the app shows an estimated quality window, using its built-in shelf-life guidance for hundreds of products. Scan a product barcode to add it without typing. No fridge inventory to maintain. Freshness is opt-in, per item, and it pings your phone as the estimate approaches.

These dates are quality estimates, not food-safety determinations; storage and handling vary, so follow package and official guidance and discard food when in doubt.

  • Lists for everything

Groceries, chores with an allowance tally, home and car maintenance on a repeating interval, packing, projects on a board. One app instead of one per job.

  • Works with no signal

No signal in the back of the shop? You can still add an item, fix a quantity and check things off. Those changes queue and go up when you are back, and the app tells you what it queued rather than pretending the write landed.

  • Installable, no app store

Install it to a phone home screen straight from the browser. It’s a Progressive Web App: no store account, no download, no separate update to remember.

Common questions

Is OurGroceries free?
Their guide says the app is free and that ads appear in a few screens to help fund development, with a paid upgrade to remove them that also removes them for everyone sharing your lists. MyListResort has no ads on any tier, so nobody has to upgrade for the household to be rid of them.
Can I keep more than a grocery list in OurGroceries?
Their guide documents lists and recipes. If the grocery list is the whole job, that is a clean answer and it does that job well. In MyListResort the same account also holds the cleaning schedule that repeats, the bills and renewals with dates, the packing list and a chore board, so the household is not spread across four apps.
What does OurGroceries do better?
Reach. It documents Siri, an Apple Watch app, voice on Android and Wear OS, a Mac app and an MCP integration for AI assistants. We are a web app you install, so we have none of that today. If shouting at a speaker is how your list gets written, they are the better fit and we would rather say so.
Does the freshness tracking need me to inventory my kitchen?
No, and that is the point of it. You mark one thing opened when you open it, and it gets a shelf-life window from the USDA data we ship. Nothing else on the list changes, and there is no pantry to maintain.

Free covers 2 shared lists with up to 4 people on each, and freshness tracking on 5 items at a time. The paid plan lifts those caps.
